How to Find Your First Customers (Service or Product)

How to Find Your First Customers (Service or Product)

Once you have a clear offer, the next step is the same for every business:

Letting people know you exist.

Whether you’re offering a service (like gardening or pressure washing)
or selling a product (like candles, jewellery, or baked goods),
every business starts by finding its first few customers.

You don’t need loads.
You just need one, then the next.

🧠 First, a Mindset Shift (Important)

You’re not bothering people.
You’re offering something useful or enjoyable.

  • A service helps someone save time or effort

  • A product brings enjoyment, convenience, or a gift

People are allowed to say no, and that’s okay.

No = information.
Yes = progress.

🥇 Start Close to Home (Fastest for Everyone)

Your first customers should come from people who already know you.

This works for:

  • Services and products

  • All ages

  • All confidence levels

Start with:

  • Family

  • Neighbours

  • Friends of family

  • People in your local area

These people:

  • Are more supportive

  • Understand you’re learning

  • Give helpful feedback

🗣️ What to Say (Simple Examples)

If you offer a service:

“Hi, I’ve just started a small local business helping with __________.
I’m offering this to a few people nearby and wondered if you’d be interested.”

If you sell a product:

“Hi, I’ve started making __________ and I’m selling a few to people locally.
Would you like to see what I’ve made?”

Clear. Polite. No pressure.

🧾 Look Organised (This Builds Trust)

Whether it’s a product or service, people trust what looks organised.

Simple things help:

  • A business card

  • Clean packaging

  • Clear pricing

  • Being polite and on time

You just need to be reliable and respectful.

📣 How Referrals Work (For Everyone)

After a happy customer, say:

“If you know anyone else who might like this, feel free to pass my details on.”

This works for all of our start-up businesses.

Word of mouth is how most small businesses grow.

🌱 Grow One Step at a Time

You don’t need:

  • Lots of customers

  • Ads

  • Big social media accounts

You need:

  • One clear offer

  • One happy customer

  • One repeat or referral

That’s real growth.

✍️ Customer-Finding Exercise

Write down:

  • 5 people you could speak to this week

  • Whether you’re offering a service or a product

  • One simple sentence explaining what you offer

Then take action on just one.

🧩 Final Tip: Confidence Comes From Doing

Confidence doesn’t come first.
Action comes first.

Every conversation makes the next one easier, whether you’re selling a service or a product.
